Basic Resume Rules

  • Formatting

Keep your resume short — 1 page only.

Leave off high school experiences, unless you are a freshman and/or feel they are extremely relevant to the position applied for.

No less than 10pt font — make sure that your resume is still readable.

    Don’t stretch the margins.

No periods when using bullet points.

  • Content

Quantify your accomplishments: “Spearheaded a summer moving and storage business with two employees, serving fifty customers and generating $19,000 in profit.”

Use action verbs to lead: “Organized a team of ten students and provided the local Houston community with free services following a natural disaster.”

Cater your resume to your industry: Leave off consulting experiences if you’re applying to banking opportunities.

Be truthful: You will be asked to explain your experiences listed on your resume in-depth.
